Pattern Play: Mosaics in HDG Projects

We love to play with color and texture. Mosaic tiles are one of our favorite ways to add character to small spaces. They are available in various colors, sizes, and price ranges. If we can’t find the perfect mosaic pattern, we will make one custom to complement the space. Here are a few examples of mosaics we have used recently on floors in bathrooms and a powder room.

Jamaica Plain Powder Room

The renovation of this powder room was meant to make it feel original to this historical Jamaica Plain home. The colors in this custom border were selected to complement the wallpaper. Despite the simplicity, the border pattern finishes off the room. This is an excellent example of how a little design can go a long way.

CLASSIC BLACK & WHITE

Black and white hexagon floor mosaics are a classic, and fit naturally into this bathroom design, although maybe a little retro feeling. The tile pattern was inspired by an image shared with us by the client. Each black hexagon tile was laid on site by hand, by HDG’s very own Maegan Dougherty. This is truly a custom mosaic floor composed of glazed porcelain tiles.

HEXAGONS IN BLUES

Mosaics don’t need to be small or traditional. This custom bathroom mosaic consists of 2” hexagons in white, powder blue, and navy blue. The scale of the floral pattern is a modern twist on a classic, adding a playful feature to this small family bathroom The bathroom had the original hex mosaic floor (bottom image) but it was in rough shape. We updated it while paying homage to the original.

Mosaics that are sheet mounted with the pattern are easier to install, reducing installation time and cost as in the blue mosaic floor in the 1920s Tudor bath renovation. This is where we start when looking for patterned mosaics.

In some cases the desired tile is not available mounted on a sheet with a pattern or the desired pattern is not scalable to standard sheet sizes. This requires the pattern to be hand laid on site, increasing labor time and cost. In some cases purchasing the tile in solid color sheets (no pattern) can be more economical than patterned mosaic sheets. This process allows for last minute changes to happen on site which can result in a better end product as in the black & white mosaic bath floor.

The bottom line is that whatever our clients imagine, we can find the products to create a custom design that enhances every space.
