Shiplap Hideaway
We designed this outer Cape Cod guest house renovation to be fun and functional. Without changing the footprint or overall layout, we updated the spaces to work for the homeowner, their family, and guests with a home office in the loft and a kid-friendly play area. We added more natural light by specifying new larger format windows and doors. Reconfiguring the kitchen layout increased storage, making it more modern and useful. An area cabinet maker made the laminate-faced cabinets. Shiplap unifies the entire guest house and pays homage to traditional cottage design. Shallow shelves lining the bathroom walls provide a spot to showcase special beach treasures. A dormer was added to the loft providing more headroom for work and play. The new, playful stairs to the loft are the most impressive feature of the renovation. The experience of going up to the loft on the offset treads brings a sense of joy associated with being on vacation.
