Team HDG: Introducing Henry Miller, Architect and Sculptor
A sculptor, furniture maker, welder, and architect to boot: Henry Miller joined Helios in July and has been bringing his distinctive perspective to our projects ever since. He quickly became a key contributor to our innovative spirit, blending technical expertise with artistic sensibility.
ROOTED IN CREATIVITY, INSPIRED BY PLACE
Growing up in Hartford, Henry was always fascinated by how design can transform everyday environments and enrich our experiences. However, he didn’t explore this interest until his second career. He earned his undergraduate degree in English Literature from the University of Connecticut, then “bounced around Boston welding and sculpting,” he explains. His interest in combining form, function, and beauty naturally led him to architecture, and he graduated with an architectural degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2007. “I was always headed in the direction of becoming an architect,” he says. “I like technical and spatial problem solving.”
Henry’s current residence in the charming, coastal town of Ipswich, fuels his artistic vision. He notes that the natural beauty and rich history of the area inspire his process. Perhaps no project has been more impactful than his work designing a house on deep pile foundations on Plum Island, where he quickly learned a lesson in battling the elements. “Designing and building in flood areas is an engineering challenge,” Henry says. Most challenges have brought him valuable experiences that he’s sure he wouldn’t have gained otherwise.
A COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT
Henry’s unique collection of skills, as well as his hands-on approach to design, have undoubtedly informed how he works as an architect, namely how he merges art and craftsmanship. At Helios, Henry says he thrives in the collaborative environment where his diverse skill set can enrich the team’s creative process. The team values his convivial presence and always-helpful attitude, along with his vast repertoire of captivating stories. Henry’s contributions embody innovation and craftsmanship, and we're excited to see how Henry’s artistry continues to shape our designs.
